    Mental Health for All Coffeehouse

    Presented by the CMHA Halifax-Dartmouth branch, the Mental Health for All Coffeehouse is a weekly event featuring live music and refreshments that aims to reduce the stigma around mental illness, while promoting local musicians and creating community. Everyone is welcome to drop in and have fun!

    This initiative is funded by a grant from the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.

    Walking the Walk: Creative Tools for Transforming Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma

    Helping professionals pay an emotional price for doing the work they do. Compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma are characterized by deep emotional and physical exhaustion and by a shift in a helping professional’s sense of hope and optimism about the future and the value of their work. The best strategy is to develop excellent self care strategies, as well as an early warning system.

    This highly interactive one day workshop incorporates a combination of solo, small group and whole group activities. Topics covered will include:

    • Understanding compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
    • Symptom checklist, targeting areas for strategic planning
    • Evaluating self-care, identifying triggers
    • Developing a personalized strategic plan for identifying and treating compassion fatigue

    safeTalk: Suicide Alertness for Everyone

    Presented by Communities Addressing Suicide Together, this safeTalk session will teach you how to provide practical help to people dealing with thoughts of suicide. Most people with thoughts of suicide go unnoticed, even though most are directly or indirectly asking for help. Through initiatives like these safeTalk sessions, more persons with thoughts of suicide will get connected to the intervention help they want.

    Communities Addressing Suicide Together Provincial Conference

    Have you been personally affected by suicide? Is suicide an important issue for you? This provincial conference will include opportunities to learn about evidence-informed practice and activities to address suicide, to share stories and experiences and to network with counterparts from across the province and beyond.

    Groups, agencies and/or companies engaged in addressing suicide through events, services, resources and/or products are invited to set up an exhibit at the conference. There is no fee to exhibit at the conference. Contact CAST Staff if you are interested.

    ASIST: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Course

    Presented by Communities Addressing Suicide Together, the ASIST workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over one million caregivers have participated in this two-day, highly interactive, practical, practice-oriented workshop.

    Fourth Annual Road to Recovery Walk

    In support of families as partners in mental health care, the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia (SSNS) will be hosting its 4th Annual Road to Recovery Walk. The goal of the walk is to raise $50,000 to fund the extensive work being done by the SSNS to help individuals and families affected by schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
